The Texas Election Code governs all elections conducted in the state of Texas. We are also governed by certain
federal requirements to insure fairness in all elections. Due to previous court cases Johnson County joins the rest
of the state in having to meet special guidelines regarding language, polling place locations and other items
related to elections.
Basically, any US Citizen, whether natural born or naturalized has the right to vote in Texas providing they are
18 years of age on election day and have registered in their county of residence at least 30 days prior to the
election.
Registration applications can be made at the Elections Office, 2 N Main St, Room B68, in Cleburne; at the
Drivers License office when getting or renewing your drivers license or through a deputy voter registrar. Many of
the members of our affiliate groups are deputized to take your application.
If you have moved to Johnson County but did not move your registration you will have to vote in your registered
precinct, wherever that might be. There are no provisions to allow you to vote in Johnson County unless you are
register in Johnson County.
The polling places are selected by the Election Commission, the Elections Administrator and approved by the
County Commissioners Court based on their availability, parking, handicapped access, etc. Some may be public
building, churches or schools as the case may be.
Normally you will vote at the same place each election, but you are advised to carefully check polling location
lists published in local papers prior to elections. Sometimes, when turnout is expected to be low, precincts will
be combined resulting in less cost to the taxpayer. So your voting location may change. Please check the available
resources and your registration card to make sure you go to the right place.
Your voter registration card (new ones are issued in December of even numbered years) is your ticket to voting
without a hassle. If you have lost or misplaced your card the election staff may let you vote with proper ID
providing your name is on the list of registered voters.
If you have any problems voting you should talk to the Election Judge at the precinct first. If the problem
cannot be resolved the Election Administrator may be able to help, or at last resort call the Texas Secretary of
State's office for assistance.
